Neil Young e os Crazy Horse gravavam em 1970 After the Gold Rush. Por mais que Young insistisse, nada saía bem ao guitarrista Danny Whitten. Danny já estava longe, irreversivelmente longe, afundando-se de dia para dia no poço da heroína. Neil viu-se forçado a dispensá-lo. Em 18 de Novembro de 72 Whitten acabou por morrer. No álbum seguinte, Harvest, Neil Young dedicou-lhe esta canção triste. “I hit the city and I lost my band. I watched the needle take another man. Gone, gone, the damage done”.
